LIFE: Cherish Your Waffle Cones

I love ice cream as I’m sure you do. I think it should have its own food group. I’ve never seen a person run after a milk, meat, or fish truck. Yet, I have seen people from all backgrounds run after the ice cream truck with little concern for on coming traffic. Very few items of food have their own jingle. At the moment, ice cream and bologna are the only two that come to mind. The one item that can consistently take your ice cream experience into a completely different stratosphere is a waffle cone. The traditional cone works just fine. However, the waffle cone is treat within itself. It makes the ice cream experience even that more memorable.

People come in different flavors just like ice cream. I always had a clear understanding of who were my friends as opposed to who were my associates. I’ve always felt that friendship is a two way street. You can’t expect a friend to do something that you yourself wouldn’t do. Most importantly everyone isn’t a waffle cone. Meaning, some people are good folks that you appreciate from a far. While others have a magical connection with you that allows them to get to get to know your deepest thoughts, fears, emotions, dreams, and ambitions. These folks are waffle cones, filled with your favorite ice cream, and topped with your favorite fixings.

Some people say that I expect to much from my friends. I counter by asking: Shouldn’t you? If you are opening yourself up to someone and exposing your raw emotions, shouldn’t he or she be held to a higher standard that the security guard that you share a pleasant “How was your weekend” with each Monday as you enter your office building? Shouldn’t you expect your friend to support you during your new endeavor. I’d like to think that you’d want your friend to be brutally honest with you. If not your friend, than who? How would you otherwise grow as a human being and correct your character flaws. By expecting a lot I’d like to think you will in turn give a lot.

Good things should happen to good people. Heart ache or foolishness by fools that you mistakenly held in high regard should not alter the way that you carry yourself. In short, let the pigs play in the mid. You should play butcher and remove (slaughter) them from your life. Your friends aren’t merely your twitter followers, skype partners, or people that like or comment on your Facebook status’. Instead they are the people that you would call if you had a flat in the wee hours of the morning on the highway with no spare in the trunk.

If your friend doesn’t meet your friend standard, maybe he or she wasn’t actually your friend at all. At times we all make the mistake of making people into what we want them to be instead of accepting them for what they are. Maybe they were always just your associate. I don’t know about you but my associates don’t get any of my waffle cone.

LIFE: Sink or Swim

Breaking News: I can’t swim. Learning how to swim is currently number one on my “Bucket List.” Swimming looks like so much fun and relaxing. Not to mention the perks of applying sun tan lotion on attractive women so that they can prance around the pool or beach in next to nothing.

It’s not as if I haven’t tried to learn. My grandfather is my family’s unofficial swim instructor. He not only quit during my swim lessons, he also mumbled something about me being removed from his will. Friends have tried to help me as an adult which routinely leads me to apologizing for my lack of coordination as well as purchasing alcohol as a peace offering and or payment for the aspirin they need for the headache I caused.

I recently swallowed my pride and signed up for adult swim lessons at my gym. Signing up for the lessons was a tragedy in itself. I wanted to do the transaction like a big time coke deal. I whispered my desire for the lessons while at the reception desk. The front desk person essentially went on the loud speaker and announced my request to everyone in a 5 mile radius. At least that is what it felt like to me. She was simply speaking at a normal tone.

When day one of lessons arrived, paranoia set in. You would have thought a female acquaintance was late on her menstrual cycle. It took four songs and a pep talk from myself, for me to muster up the energy to get out of the car. At a glance, the pool seemed huge. I decided to channel my inner “Finding Nemo” and hopped right into the water. Stereotypically the class was filled with Asians and African Americans. I patiently waited for Dave Chappelle to make an appearance and yell “action” as this was surely high comedy.

Surprisingly, I took right to it. I wasn’t scared at all. My biggest fear was letting myself down. That and not packing my flip flops, gym lock, and swim trunks. Who knows why I wasn’t afraid, and who cares, as long as I get out of the kiddie pool and get to challenge Michael Phelps in the next Olympics.

If rules are meant to be broken then fears must be meant to be overcome. Give it a try. Ask your boss for a raise if you think you deserve it. Give the roller coaster a try. You’re a star so heights should be a piece of cake for you. If you’re out and see someone that you find attractive, go introduce yourself. Confidence is a turn on for most people. Give yourself a chance to sink or swim. With any luck you’ll make it out of the beginner’s class with flying colors.

LIFE: Sweet Dreams

Sleeping is and forever will be one of my favorite hobbies. It can be refreshing, peaceful, and the perfect remedy for tough times. I once read about the REM cycle of sleep. During this cycle, we experience our most memorable dreams. From that moment on, I would compare my sleeping to this cycle.

When people fall in love, they often say that their relationship is like a dream come true. As if they fell asleep, entered the REM cycle, and woke up with the life they envisioned as a child. White picket fences, a travel companion, family pet, and the sound of children’s feet running up and down the stairs, and it was finally all theirs.

Some people are forced to wake up from their dream and deal with reality. Things do not work out with a mate, which relegates a harsh reality of sadness, insecurity, nervousness, and self doubt. Others watch their dreams turn into nightmares. Instead of having to fend off Jason, Freddie Krueger, and Chucky, they are left to deal with a relationship consisting of boredom, unhappiness, hatred, and worst of all pessimism.

We all look forward to falling asleep (being in love), but we never know what awaits us when our heads hit the pillow. The lucky ones enjoy a full eight hours of sleep while others have to be satisfied with a power nap. I wish you all sweet dreams and hope the bed bugs don’t bite. If you are anything like me, you are cranky when you don’t get a good night sleep.

HELPFUL REMINDERS

I never use tumblr. Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram are my main chick, side chick, and jum off. I don't have time for anyone else. I took a peak at it the other day as my buddy was perusing it and I came across the gems listed below. This feels like a list that you'd expect to receive from your grandmother who just happens to be a rocket scientist.

• Accidentally close a tab? Ctrl+Shift+T reopens it.
• Bananas release dopamine, eat them when you’re sad.
• CTRL+SHIFT+ESC is the one handed version of CTRL+ALT+DEL
• Don’t brush your teeth hard, it makes them sensitive and removes enamel.
• Don’t like spiders? Put citronella oil on your walls and they will not go there.
• Drink one glass of water for every alcoholic drink you have, you’ll get drunk without getting a hangover.
• Get clear ice cubes by boiling water before freezing it
• Heal paper cuts and immediately stop the pain with chapstick.
• If you accidentally write on your dry erase board with a permanent marker, scribble over it with a dry eraser marker to remove it.
• If your shoes smell, put them in the freezer overnight, it will kill the bacteria.
• Make bug bites stop itching with a banana peel.
• Make a paper longer with 12-point text, but 14-point periods and commas.
• Need to get around a blocked website at work? Try replacing the http:// with https://
• Never send your resume as a word file (unless asked) Instead, print it to a pdf file, it’s much cleaner and professional looking.
• Pick a flavor of gum you don’t normally chew, and chew it while studying during a test.
• Place a piece of bread in a container with your homemade cookies and  they will stay soft.
• Put a dry towel into a dryer with wet clothes, they will dry faster.
• Put toothpaste on a pimple and it will dry out.
• Practise fake smiling in the mirror every day before going to work/school, you’ll genuinely start to feel happier.
• Rub canola/olive oil on knives before cutting onions, you won’t cry, alternatively chew gum and you won’t either.
• Short on time with a wrinkled dress shirt? Hang it up in the bathroom to steam it flat.
• The night before, place things you don’t want to forget the next morning on top of your shoes.
• Use hydrogen peroxide to remove blood stains from clothing.
• When cleaning windows use newspapers or coffee filters instead of paper towels, they will not leave streaks.
• When microwaving bread products/pizza put a glass of water in with it, it will keep your bread for going spongy.
• When you move into a new place you’re renting, take pictures of any and all damage, then post them on facebook (privately if preferred) so you can use the reference date as proof you didn’t do it.
• When searching plane tickets online delete your cookies prior, prices go up when you visit a site multiple times.

Life: Hate Paints an Ugly Picture

This past weekend I attended an event with the rest of 31 Percent at an art gallery in the city. I was extremely impressed by how the night began. There was a great décor, drinks and appetizers, not to mention, the artwork was mind-blowing. To add to my delight, everything was free of charge. The room was filled with intelligent people who have achieved varying degrees of success in their careers. As the evening began, I was under the impression that the pastel paintings on the walls would be the only artwork on display. As it turned out, I got to witness first-hand the dark images that drape the canvas of “HATE.”

“Her hair is a mess.” “Look at those shoes.” “They don’t even have Ciroc here.” “Why is he so short?” These are just a few of the statements I overheard coming from a group of women. They huddled in the corner, Mascato in hand, dishing out criticism of everyone who entered the gallery. They sat with scowls on their faces, scrutinizing patrons, as if they were judges on an Olympic committee. As I watched these women give out no score higher than a four, I had so many questions. Who died and made them art gallery critics? Are they really upset that this guy is only 5’6? Who gets mad at a free event? Most importantly, why must I constantly encounter people like this? Only one word could answer my series of questions...HATE!

Some people hate that you have a better job than them. They despise the fact that you have a nice car. They are peeved that you went on a date with some girl they went to high school with ten years ago! This hate is then coupled with childish behavior. The rolling of the eyes, the sucking of the teeth and the always-present gossiping. Although unnecessary in my eyes, some people view these acts as part of their daily regimen.

The question remains, why? Why spend your time on negativity? Instead of being envious of someone else’s possessions, you should ask what they did to achieve success. Instead of being angry at another woman for dating “the man of your dreams,” you should realize that there are 20 other individuals in the room who could be “the man of your reality.” There is so much scrutinizing taking place, but people often fail to do the criticizing where it matters the most...WITHIN!

If someone isn’t happy with the current state of their lifestyle, it’s no one’s responsibility to change things but their own. Figure out what you want and get it! Get to the point in your life where you have more important things to do than snicker at someone who has on last year’s Polo. Because quite frankly, Hate Paints an Ugly Picture.

Life: Refusing to Be Regular

Last Sunday, I decided to take a walk downtown to clear my head after a long weekend. As I gathered my thoughts, pondered my future and dreaded the work week ahead, I began to notice an eerie similarity among all of the buildings. It wasn’t the meter maids writing tickets like they were going out of style or the pan handlers setting up shop in prime location. It was the fact that the top floor on just about every building had the lights on with someone working diligently as if it were a Tuesday afternoon. These were the CEOs and presidents of major organizations throughout the city. My perception of these individuals has always been someone who takes two hour lunch breaks and leaves work early. That idea was put to rest as I passed building after building with the same view. I began to realize just how important working harder than everyone else truly is. It’s not that these individuals are smarter than most, they just have the drive to put in the extra time. This got me to thinking about a more serious issue. The people that need to put in the extra time rarely do. The guy in the mail room that wants a promotion leaves every day at five on the dot. The woman that wants a raise makes sure she gets her full hour lunch break. While these hourly employees are taking their situation for what it is, the salaried individual who has the office with a view is refusing to be regular (average or typical).

A major problem that people of all backgrounds face is stagnation. People feel as though they are destined to live according to the lifestyle that they were raised in. People refuse to progress and are comfortable with what they are given. They wish they could be the guy in the luxury car instead of crafting a plan to make that purchase on their own. Being satisfied paying bills and having just enough money left to go out on the weekend is the epitome of being regular. It’s difficult to watch people live this way of life. So many talented individuals fall short of their aspirations simply because they don’t put in the time. Talent alone rarely breeds success. No matter how skilled you are at your craft, it is mandatory that you continue to work at it. Whether you are one of the top college athletes or an up and coming accountant at your job, if you don’t put in the time to get better you will never reach your full potential.

You often hear people complaining that this way of life takes up too much of their personal time. The thing is the time you spend at work is your time. It’s the time that you are spending to better your career and pursue future endeavors. It is the time that you are investing to be able to afford the lifestyle that you want for you and your family. Working half assed is unacceptable. No one ever says “I’m only going to partially enjoy myself at this party tonight.” So why do we take this attitude when it comes to work? Your work should be a reflection of you. You would feel offended if someone looked you in the face and called you regular. Yet people’s work ethic reflects that every day.

I know that there are going to be individuals that disagree with me and feel as though corporate success is not the most important thing in the world. They have no desire for the pressure that comes with the big office on the top floor. Perhaps my words alone are not enough to capture these individuals. Some people have to fall victim to a common way of life before realizing the necessity of diligence. Maybe they have never seen what happens to someone who thinks that natural talent is enough to get by. These people just have to see the reality of being just regular. Luckily, for them, Bill Cosby provided a scared straight tutorial.

LIFE - Are you Evolving?

When was the last time you looked at a picture of the younger you? The you that wore clothes that would now be considered Halloween costumes. If you were too focused on your face and not your misguided sense of style, you would notice the changes that your physical appearance has occurred over the years. The smile lines that you now have, a scar from a pimple that you picked at, your receding hair line or bald spot, and so on.

Styles, dates, and time change, as do we. As we evolve, we subconsciously wonder if we have the courage to change or if we are willing to put ourselves in new situations and around new people that challenge us. Some of us jump at the chance to develop, while others make the mistake of thinking that the person they currently are, is who they are destined to be.

It’s never too late to start. Every second of every day provides you with an opportunity to evolve. For example, try a new food. Pick something as random as cheese. In any other circumstance it’s just another everyday food item, but this time, go nuts. Instead of the safe American, try Feta, Munster, Gouda, etc. Not only may you enjoy one of them, but maybe you’ll even learn some new facts that you can share at social and work events. Plus, it goes well with wine which is an added bonus. Evolving is easier when you have alcohol infused confidence. Your thoughts on these cheeses can be more intriguing to a bunch of strangers than your opinion on Bosh, Wade, and Lebron or Snookie, Pauly D, and the Situation. The small things add up. They make you feel alive and excite you in the morning. The uncertainty and excitement that you feel when you have something new in your life that is yours alone can give you the same invigorating feeling you had when you would sit Indian style for hours and play with your favorite doll or action figure. Your favorite toy in your eyes was doing super human things. The sound effects and dialogue that you added while Ken and Barbie or G.I Joe or and Hulk Hogan made only made things more surreal. Adding something new to your adult life pushes you to picture yourself in different ways. Venturing out of your comfort zone will lead you to bliss.

Self evaluating yourself is literally looking in the mirror and asking yourself if you like what you see physically, emotionally, and mentally. The person looking back at you will not be the person that you once knew. Some of us change for the better while others remain stagnant, which is can actually be viewed as taking a step back. Having the will to change yourself more than your clothes or physical appearance is the key to having lifelong happiness. Sure we are grateful to be alive. However, can you honestly say that you’re living? Boring is played out and will never be back in style. Try new things, be different, and be a better person than you were yesterday.

Wrap It Up

I’m tired of everyone telling me I should cover it up, as if I am the only one out here that’s doing it. It has nothing to do with me being young, because I know there are people well into their 60s that feel the exact same way that I do. Fact of the matter is many of you only wear them because you don’t want to experience the same ridicule that I go through.

Believe me I have heard all of the horror stories as to what could occur if I don’t protect myself. “You could get really sick” or “you’re going to wish you wore one when you get older.” It’s not like I never bought them before, but when it’s time to go I seem to always misplace it. So I figure what the heck!!

My mom has pleaded with me for years to stop thinking so foolishly and even brought some for me. And I do try for her, but it doesn’t take long before I plummet back to my ways and take it off. Not to mention they are not always that comfortable. Most are too small and don’t even fit right. Wouldn’t I do myself just as much harm if I did not wear it properly?

So please stop judging me, this is my life and I’ll live it the way I please. If I catch something you can go ahead and say I told you so.
But plain and simple…I Done Like Wearing Winter Hats. LOL

The Children Are Our Future…But What Lies Ahead?

Since 2008 the US economy has been a horror story. We have seen how the country’s financial status has affected the housing market, corporate America, and the spending habits of everyone from the upper class of Santa Clara, California to the lower class of Detroit, Michigan. The one area we have yet to address is how these changes will affect the youth of America.

As innocent and naïve that we may think children are, they are more than aware of their surroundings. They may not be fully conscious of what a bill is, but can comprehend the look of despair on their parents’ face whenever they check the mail box. Sure they love visiting family members, yet they understand it’s a problem when instead of bringing a change of clothes the family is packing up all of their belongings. How will these occurrences affect their outlook on life and the financial success that they are able to obtain?

It’s difficult to tell America’s youth to stay in school and go to college when the majority of college graduates are in debt to the mob (Sallie Mae) and wearing holes into the soles of their shoes pounding the pavement for jobs. Sure the odds of becoming the professional athlete or next Lil’ Wayne are slim, but when they see the other end of the spectrum is it worth attempting to achieve?

My biggest fear is that they will take the “easy way out” that is making a paycheck off of buffoonery and sheer ignorance. In the age where a Twitter page or YouTube video can make someone an overnight success, it’s too easy for young kids to succumb to a lifestyle where fame constantly defeats morals and pride in ones self.

As adults all we can do is tell them about the principles that our generation failed to hold in high regard. Save money for a rainy day, don’t buy a house and a car you can’t afford and no job is guaranteed. And who knows, maybe by the time they are members of the college graduating class of 2020 there will be job postings worthy of the talent that the future holds.

Microfiber State of Mind

When I was looking to furnish my apartment I had one requirement: Microfiber Couches. People looked at me like I was crazy for being so adamant about the material. Some thought that price range or quality should have been at the top of the list, but I knew not to neglect the “New Suede.” Three years and numerous beer and pasta sauce stains later, the couch still looks brand new. I never have to worry about the occasional spill when people are over. It’s nothing a little bit of water, a wet rag and Febreeze won’t cure. This got me to thinking. What if I could apply the Microfiber technique to every aspect of my life?

Imagine if you could take the same no worries, I can clean it up approach to missing a credit card payment, running late for work, or mailing your rent check on the 15th when it was due on the first? Sure everyone else is looking at you like your crazy for having a nonchalant attitude regarding these incidents, but you know that by tomorrow there will be no visual recollection of the mishap. Call me a dreamer, but I wish I could live a life of microfiber.

Life: Life's Like a Movie

If life were a movie it would be a drama. It consists of several cliff hangers, gut wrenching moments, and a cast of characters that you fall in love with. It can be tough to watch and make you want to close your eyes but the ending always leaves you sitting on the end of your seat. In the words of Terrell Owens, "Just sit back and get your popcorn ready." The ride may end up being bumpy, but with any luck you will play the role of hero in your autobiographical motion pitcure.

Life: Lateness

I have a bad habit. A really bad habit that is rude and inconsiderate: I am always late (or rushing which is my opinion is worse than being late). I think of myself as a considerate person. I am a planner and list maker by nature. However, I always have this feeling in the pit of my stomach that there are not enough hours in the day. I feel as though I have life A.D.D. I find myself getting sidetracked and unable to stay focused on the task at hand. I tried to set my clocks fast but after a period of time I started calculating my extra time which then results in me being late. When I'm not late I am just on time which makes me worried during my journey to my destination. Once I arrive I feel out of wack, flustered and unable to get comfortable for some time.

So I'm putting my foot down. Being late is not OK. Being on time is not fine. I will now treat all situations as if I'm a part of the police bomb unit and the timer is ticking down. Thankfully I won't blow up. With my track record, I think we know what the result would be.

Life: Just do the right thing and chill

Have you watched the news recently? You have police beating people half to death and sexually assaulting women.

Twelve year old boys shooting at each other. After witnessing this shooting first hand on Saturday I have come to scary conclusion.

People out here are crazy.

Everyone is spending so much time hating each other when what we need to do is listen to the message from the wise man at the end of this video.

Things you do with White people that you wont ever do with Black people

The Professional Rationalist, John Butler, was spending time with a female friend that happened to be African American. She went to the fridge to get a beverage of her choice, and noticed the save the date magnet for a young couple that happened to be white. She shouted in a WB, UPN, ghetto girl voice, "OMG, you have white friends."

The Professional Rationalist immediately turned into Cliff Huxtable and explained in after school special form that white people are just like black people, don't bite, and can be your friends too.

The interaction between the Professional Rationalist and Lil Kim (obviously not the young lady's name but will be used for comedic purposes) illustrates that many people may not actually have friends from different races. Yes, you may speak to the parent of white kids on your child's sports team, you may go to lunch with a coworker, and you may share your weekend highlights with your company's doorperson. Yet, you aren't go in their house and take your shoes off friends.

This made me think. I have done some amazing things in my life. Many of them have been while I was in the company of white people. Admittedly, two of my best friends happen to not have pigment. Therefore, I speak from personal experience when I say that white people, other than the whole slavery situation, offer huge benefits such as sampling for rap music, exotic foods, camping trips, and networking for jobs.

Therefore, in honor or Elizabeth Taylor, Grey from Greys Anatomy, Michael Jackson, The Rat Pack, Tyrone from the show California Dreams, the nappy headed black kid from Barney, Eminem, The Willis' from the Jefferson's, Lisa Turtle from Saved by the Bell, Hall & Oates, The Beastie Boys, and Tina Marie, we will be bringing to you a feature that explains all of the cool things you can do with white people that you would never do with black people.

Right on my brothers and sisters.

Life: Driving on the Expressway

The expressway can turn the most god-fearing, caring, kind, man or woman into a natural born killer, gangsta rapper, or racist. Breaking in the passing lane, failure to use a turn signal, cutting someone off, driving in a four wheeler's blind spot, cruising in the passing lane, and my favorite: pumping the breaks for no apparent reason, can make someone say or do things that they normally condem.

Driving on the expressway is like a live version on the MTV show "Boiling Point." On a particular bad day, you start to think that your car has been bugged with candid cameras.

Cursing is permitted by all ages. Racial slurs are fair game. The use of middle finger is actually considered a common reaction.

So to all you bad drivers, god bless, happy birthday, safe travels, and stay the "F" out of our way!

Life: This Song Could Save Your Life

I have a challenge for you guys and gals. Whenever you are about to indulge in something dumb, outrageous, or potentially life threatening turn on the radio. Flip through all of the stations. If this song comes on it means that you were not meant to partake in that activity. I'm no preacher; far from it. I can't tell you the last time I've been to Church. Only thing I know is that if you are having second thoughts about doing something and this auto-tune laced gospel song comes on, you better fall back. It could save your life.

LIFE: Cap and Gown Reflections

I am sitting in my graduation from Drexel University similar to the way that I conduct myself during most ceremonies…texting nonsense to family members and cracking jokes with my fellow graduates seated around me. I decide to pay attention to the commencement for a second. They were about to present an award to a high school teacher who made an impact on a graduate's life. First thought that came to mind…Bullshit

I’m sure this teacher worked him hard and taught the kid a few study habits, but growing as a person is so much deeper than that. I sat back in my chair, stopped texting for a bit and began to reflect on the moments in my life that helped me to get to this moment in my cap and gown.

My family was key. Not just because they fed me, took me to Disney on Ice and copped me the latest Barkley jersey. They were key because they really had my best interest at heart. They could have sent me to public school and spent the money they saved on Heavy D concert tickets. Instead they realized the importance of me receiving a quality education. For the life of me I couldn’t understand why they wouldn’t let me hang out with certain people. Did they not want me to be cool? Not at all. They just saw my potential before I knew what the word meant. When I see guys that I knew as a child wheelchair bound from violence or stealing recyclables to feed their drug habits, I thank my family for screening my friends.

What people fail to realize is that it isn’t always the positive Hallmark memories that shape who you are. As much as I cherish the memories of getting two Iverson rookie jerseys for $100 with Corey or getting into the wildest situations with Dos or Chris; I value the sense of hopelessness I felt when the doctor told me that my Dad wasn’t going to make it out of the hospital. I can appreciate the anger that I felt when a cop told me and my friends, “Move and I’ll blow your fuckin’ heads off.” Sure these last two examples are far from being as pleasant as the first two, but the key is that I made it through. No matter what difficult issues arise throughout the rest of my life, reflecting on these events lets me know that I will be able to make it through.

As I conclude my personal reflection, I glance back up at the 22 year old graduate embracing his high school teacher as if he was Jesus and had just saved the party by turning water into Bacardi Razz.

Maybe if he would have had the same reflection I just had he would have given the teacher a simple hand shake and kept it moving. Perhaps we all need to remember those days and think about who and what events have been the TRUE reasons behind our current success.

Life: Betting is Not for Me

Betting just isn't my twist. I don't get the thrill that most hardcore gamblers get. If I loose ten dollars the rest of you gamblers can bet the house that I'm leaving the table. Perhaps I'm just terrified that I will end up as one of those dudes that gambled away their life savings assuming that LeBron and the Cavs were going to make the NBA Finals this year. One thing is for sure...I rather squander a couple bucks as opposed to loosing this bet to my man Kev.
