Hitting on a woman is a fine art. It is a simple process that men make complicated. On television, the cool guy always has a cool pick up line. Zack had a new line every Saturday morning on Save by the Bell. In real life, romance often seems to start with a smile, or a quick “Hello.”
One of the most painful experiences that a man will endure is delivering his scripted pick up line in a crowded setting, only to have the woman he approaches misinterpret what he said, and or not be impressed with its smoothness or relevancy. This forces the most confident of men to cringe as if he is about to enter the ring with Kimbo Slice. You hope that she puts you out of your misery by simply walking away. If god answered your prayers, a natural disaster would occur, you would have a stroke, urinate on yourself, or hear an urgent message from the DJ stating that someone’s car has combusted. I have heard some men shout, “never mind,” just so that they could get out of this awkward situation.
The one thing that you do not want to hear is the woman to say, “HUH!” A pick up line never goes over well the second time. It actually sounds worse, becomes more insulting, and makes you out to be an even bigger loser.
When I heard that Nas was titling his new cd “Nigger”, I got the bad pickup line in the crowded bar feeling. Nas is one of the few MC’s who still takes his craft seriously. He continues to push the envelope and starts dialogue within the Hiphop culture. His last cd, “Hiphop is dead,” sparked an amazing debate between coasts as well as generations that still rages on today. It is nice to see him explain his vision, and force us all to do something that we hate: Talk about race!
Now that’s an interesting concept for ya!
